Click to report rating    10/29/19   1     1     1     1   Waited 5 hours just to be told to go somewhere else. Staff are all uncaring ,vets are rude and disrespectful and are very quick to point out they carry insurance. I did not realize VCA stood for veterinary care absent! RID: 68687

8/25/17   1     3     1     1   The Ottawa Veterinary Clinic is very expensive & the waiting time is absurd. I went on Aug. 21 with my dog Buster. He was very quiet and inactive. Dr. Swatman examined him and was to call me the next day. No one called. I called and another vet told me nothing was wrong. Dr. Swatman called me late on Wed. to confirm that they found nothing wrong. I told him Buster neck muscles were twitching and was in a lot of pain. The vet won’t give him pain meds unless he sees him again. Consequently, after explaining the issue to the clerk I was given an appointment for September 5! I consider this undue cruelty. I went back on Aug. 23 just after 7am. At 8:30 I asked the clerk how long before Buster was seen. She replied that it was very busy that morning. There were no other animals in the waiting room. I told her I had to go home at 8:50 to get my husband (who has stage-4 cancer) out of bed. She seemed unconcerned. I am now looking for another veterinary hospital. RID: 64515

7/23/17   1     2     1     1   We suspected our dog had swallowed a tampon ( lol, keeping it real) Our regular vet was unable to see us on the weekend so we went to OVH. We told them what we suspected and after a 2 hour wait were brought to an exam room. Vet came in and before so much as touching our dog, said "we always recommend surgery" Um shouldn't a vet at least assess the dog? No Xray? We declined surgery so she said our 2nd option was IV drip, an overnight stay and an anti nauseau shot for $1000! We said no-I should say money is not an issue for us, but professional service is. When we said no she reluctantly said 3rd option was IV drip and anti-nauseau and take him home to assess for $250. Hmm why not give us all options up front instead of saying the most expensive first? This place is a money grabber. I heard them tell almost everyone there that their pets were "dehyrdrated" and needed a fluid drip. We will never go back here. We are seeing are great REAL vet tomorrow morning. RID: 64246

6/21/17   3     4     4     1   We had a bad experience with Dr. Pinon where we were asked to schedule a second physical assessment (within 6 months of the first) before she would dispense any medication. The medication in question is one that my dog has been taking daily for 4 years now and could literally die from a few missed doses. I have had a few different vets and have never been asked to come in for a second annual appointment and a prescription was always renewed over the phone. Dr. Pinon knows full well that my dog needs this medication or she can literally die if we miss a few dosages. So she refused to give us any room to breathe and instead extorted us into making a rushed appointment. Whether there was a misunderstanding about having to get another physical or not, Dr. Pinon could have prescribed a few weeks medication so we could get the matter sorted. You don't need to trap me into another appointment. I just need to understand what I am paying for and to be treated professionally RID: 63968
Click to report rating    6/19/17   1     1     1     1   My partner and I brought our Kitten into the OVH for emergency treatment. He had sustained a deep cut behind his ear which would require stitches and our regular vet's office was closed. We were informed that our cat would require sedation/stitches and were asked to return for pick-up once he awoke from the procedure. Within 30 minutes of departure we received a phone call informing us of an accident. While under IV sedation awaiting stitching, our 9 month old kitten was attacked by a clinic-owned cat. Our kitten was severely injured, requiring nearly 40 additional stitches to his original injury. He has a 6-8 inch gash across his back, a 3 inch gash across his throat, a 2 inch cut to his neck, and a 1 inch gash to his leg, all of which required stitches. He was burned by the heating lamp they placed him under. Our poor kitten has been traumatized and maimed by the OVH's negligence. The vet Dr. Pinon was apparently in the room as this all happened, but was unable to stop the attack... RID: 63944
Click to report rating    10/2/16   1     2     3     2   I can't say much about the entire staff just the doc who told us not to waste the money on x-rays after a truck backed over our pup; that she is fine and not to worry. It was a tear in hear diaphragm and misplaced stomach and organs that lead to her death two months later at amother clinic. the x-rays showed it all. She died of cardiac arrest at 1.3yrs old. Other vet clinics say it is procedure to XRAY any vehicle animal accidents no matter what. Guess this guy believes more in his instinct. Not what I want from a professional. Not what I wanted for Andi. RID: 61728

10/2/15   2     3     2     1   Three vets found my dogs x-rays inconclusive.... $1400 for this. All x-rays were faxed over to my regular vet where he thankfully found a matter in the x-rays. I will never recommend the ottawa vet clinic! RID: 58568
Click to report rating    6/10/15   2     1     4     1   Vet literally just guessed at what was wrong with our dog. Two days later we went to another vet who did a thorough examination and identified the problem. The second vet also charged half of what Ottawa Veterinarian Hospital charged which also included an imjection and two different medications. Be warned before entering, the interior of Ottawa Veterinarian Hospital smells extremely bad - the pungent odor is overwhelming. RID: 57363
Click to report rating    4/1/15   1     2     2     1   After two separate visits within 10 hours to the Ottawa Veterinary Hospital and about $600 in tests and consultations, the vet was unable to correctly and promptly diagnose our dog, or recommend appropriate treatment. She died about 4 hours after one of their vets told us her condition was not life-threatening. There are lots of great vets in Ottawa, and three other emergency clinics. We will be recommending these other vets to anyone who cares about their pets. RID: 56487
Click to report rating    2/3/15   5     5     4     4   We have brought our dog here twice in the last year for emergency treatment. The service and care were excellent both times, and we were grateful to have a place to get urgent care after hours. Unfortunately, emergencies often cost a lot, due to the various tests and the 24-hour care that is often required. However, I believe the costs for OVH are basically the same on a per-item basis as most vets in Ottawa. For example, an X-ray will cost you the same as what you probably pay at your regular vet. And the vets at OVH will explain all the costs before they proceed. So if you're at all concerned about your pet after hours, do not be afraid to go to this clinic. If your pet truly needs emergency care, you'll be glad you went, and the cost will not be much higher than if you were at your regular vet during regular hours. RID: 55753
Click to report rating    1/21/15   5     5     4     5   I have brought all my animals to this clinic. They have had best care, and honest assessments. When my latest dog had an untreatable illness the staff were supportive of my decision to euthanize. When my cat was diagnosed with diabetes I got support and education, and was able to keep him for another 5 years. Even my "fear-biter" dog was treated well. All veterinary work is expensive - as all health care is expensive, but the taxpayer does not subsidize dog hospitals. RID: 55551
Click to report rating    10/1/14   2     3     2     1   My cat had a urinary tract infection, had to try a catheter 3 times because nothing worked, cost more than 3,000$ because nothing they tried worked, they sad my final step would be to do surgery which would cost another $3,000....Thank god it didn't come to that I would have had to euthanize my baby, They are SOOOO over priced its insane. Not worth the price for the 24 hour crap service. RID: 53841
Click to report rating    7/10/14   2     4     4     4   I have been going here with my german shepherd since she was a puppy (so 3 years now) and have had many different vets. I find their service incredibly inconsistent and overall not very thorough. I recently went in to get my girl's broken tooth looked at. My dog is fairly shy and the vet that was with us, whose name I wish I could remember, rushed right in to try to open my dog's mouth while standing up despite the fact that my dog was obviously scared and trying to hide under my legs. When I mentioned to this vet that it might help if she bent down or crouched she said, "oh, my legs don't work like that anymore..." and continued to intimidate my dog while trying to get a hand in her mouth. In the end, she was unsuccessful at even getting a glimpse of the tooth but nonetheless recommended that we go to a specialist. She told me they'd call Alta Vista and then call me later that day...I waited 3 days..then called them only to play phone tag for 2 more days. Very, very unimpressed. RID: 52488
Click to report rating    5/7/14   5     4     5     4   All of my animals come here. The staff are fantastic and knowledgeable. The front desk staff are very friendly and caring. The wait time on the phones is minimal. The wait time in person is nearly non-existent. I have had my cat in for emergency service, that required an overnight stay. They called me every few hours with updates. Them kept me informed and gave me treatment options. He is doing very well now. My dogs go there for their routine vet care. Always friendly and caring. I would not go anywhere else with my animals. They have all services/machines available onsite. Very fast service, and they show you the results of any xrays, ultrasounds, bloodwork, etc. I moved 35 kms away, and still make the drive to go to this clinic. RID: 51468
Click to report rating    12/29/13   4     4     3     1   Beware of the 'emergency service' fee, it is 60$. 450$ bill to go in and get 2 inconclusive xrays, a tiny bottle of vomit suppressant and 3 cans of "bland" food. We also waited half an hour just for the receptionist to ad up our bill, she kept getting pulled away from the desk and the other receptionist was not working on it. Sunday evening visit. RID: 48992
Click to report rating    8/29/13   5     5     5     4   I have been using this vet service for over 20 yrs. I have always been impressed by their professionalism. For 13 yrs Dr. Swatman has been our vet. He does not over prescribe and has recommended over the counter medications (eg Benadryl). Overall a great service! RID: 46616
Click to report rating    8/28/13   2     4     3     1   This place loves to over prescribe and misdiagnose. Also, if I'm paying $80 a visit, I want my dog assessed for ALL his issues, not just 1, forcing me to come back for another visit. It's a complete money grab which is why I'm on this site looking for a place that will give my dog the care he deserves. RID: 46578
Click to report rating    2/15/13   1     3     1     1   This place is aweful and I will never take another one of my babies there. They over-charge, misdiagnose, and are overall rude. This place has changed considerably over the years and I have been going to them for 30 years. NEVER again. RID: 40444
Click to report rating    2/6/13   4     5     4     3   I used their emergency service for my dog after Blair Animal Hospital misdiagnosed him. They took good care of him and found the problem immediately. Their charges were a little steep at times but within their estimates. They also were caring enough to suggest transferring him to Alta-Vista who had a specialist for my dog's problem once they definitely knew what was wrong. RID: 40205
Click to report rating    6/25/12   5     4     3     2   I had to take my dog to be euthanized in the middle of the night. The Vet (Dr. Arthur) and her assistant were wonderful and caring. It was a very sad night but the service could not have been better. RID: 35199
Click to report rating    6/10/12   1     4     3     1   Took my cat here for a blockage on a weekend. They catheterized him with no sedation what soever. I could hear him screaming from the waiting room. When I confronted them they said it was another cat even though it was 8 in the evening on a Sunday, and I was the only one there. They gave me a prescription food which he hated and would not eat. When I called back to see about getting another food for him, I was told each time "He'll eat it when he's hungry enough". My cat lost 7 pounds over that food. I went to another vet who tried 5 different foods before we found one he would eat. He did block again a couple of years later, and was put under for the catheterization. Funny though. The cost the second time was pretty much the same as the first time even though my cat didn't have additional pain inflicted on him, and was kept in hospital with quality care. RID: 34884

1/20/12   5     4     2     3   I came in on an emergency appointment with my cat after 7pm. Within a couple of hours they had a diagnosis and a treatment plan that unfortunately required surgery at a substantial cost. I don't know if this was expensive in comparison to other clinics. However their care and consideration post surgery was impressive, update calls from the vet tech early every morning, then mid morning update calls from the vet and visits were arranged with my "boy" until he could come home. The staff have always been great, however their regular appointment timing could be a bit better. The last appointment I had, I had to sit in the waiting room for almost 30 minutes with large dogs barking their fool heads off (and my cat is a bit nervous to begin with). My cat has been doing very well ever since, with an adjusted diet and regular care. RID: 31675
Click to report rating    10/12/11   1     1     1     1   I took my dog to see 5 different vets at this hospital. None of them could figure out what was wrong with my little girl and she passed away. They did numerous tests which added up to a lot of money and the results were inconclusive so they wanted to do them all again. Each visit I had to wait over 20mins past my appointment time. The support staff was rude and unfriendly. I will not go to this office again. RID: 28244
Click to report rating    9/14/11   1     2     1     1   Although they advertise on their website that walk-ins are welcomed, they have charged us an "emergency" fee at 10:00 AM because we did not have an appointment, despite the fact that their lobby was empty. On their website there is no word about the need to have an appointment. RID: 27579
Click to report rating    4/13/11   5     4     3     4   Very nice caring staff, very professional vet who takes the time to look after you and your pet. RID: 24349
Click to report rating    10/24/09   5     4     5     5   from the moment I walk through the doors, I feel like a valued client. Staff are pleasant. The care is excellent even when a dog has to see different vets during the course of a long treatment. The interactions with the vets are as technical as you want to be and they openly discuss different options so that I can choose the one that is most appropriate for my animal. RID: 15007
Click to report rating    7/3/09   3     2     5     4   The staff are caring and organized. They had difficulty diagnosing a serious illness in my dog. The emergency clinic should be better staffed and equiped for busy times if they want to run it as an emergency clinic. I think they cannot give the care our pets deserve because they are overwhelmed on holidays. The xrays were unreadable when my dog was brought in as an emergency and I will always wonder if he got the care he deserved because the vets were so busy. The initial diagnosis was wrong in the first place the day before leading to the emergency situation. RID: 13377
