Wonderful empathetic help during a very trying and emotional time just recently. I cannot praise Dr Alex and the other fine folks at the hospital enough.

My first visit last year was with Dr. Jill for a dental consultation. She was amazing and the staff are tremendous. The consultation was free of charge which is virtually unheard of these days. This year, I got Dr. Funk. New to the clinic. Let's just say I'm glad he wasn't my first impression of this clinic! I really did not need to hear all about his divorce and how he lost everything he worked for to his ex. Had to go back to him a second time for a follow up and he was 45 minutes late getting to me and my dog. The long and short of it is that I will definitely continue to go there, but ask for days when Dr. Jill is available ??

I'm new to Nanaimo and had not obtained a vet yet for our Allergy Kitty a new Vet. Unfortunately she had a really bad reaction to a tin of food we had given her thinking it would be ok. Clearly we were wrong! So Wrong! When I called this clinic they were very helpful and accommodating and understood my panic and worry taking my kitty in. She was treated very well as was I. She was provided with medication and food for to eat that should not upset her. The Vet was so nice. She even called us at home a couple of days later to check how she was doing. I couldn't be happier. Well done to staff and Doctors. : D

As a volunteer for a local rescue cat organization, I have experience with six or seven different veterinary clinics in Nanaimo. NVH is my favourite, and the first one I call when I need an appointment. I probably go there 30 times a year. The reception staff are polite and efficient, and the vets I have dealt with - Dr. Clodagh (sorry, don't know her surname) and Dr. Jill Harrison - are outstanding. Dr. Clodagh is quiet, respectful and thorough, while Dr. Jill is friendly, outgoing, and generous with her time and expertise. In addition, Dr. Jill Harrison has done extra tests for our nonprofit rescue organization at no charge. I love NVH, and always recommend it to friends and family. Incidentally, many of the other vet hospitals I have dealt are good as well. It's just that NVH is my favourite.

Dr Hayward has no idea what procedures were being done during our visit. It was neuter and vaccinations. It seemed that he wanted to make another visit to receive more money. He as well told my son shh we are talking in a very condescending tone when my son was showing him his umbrella. I was already dealing with telling my son yes I see hold on a second. It was not his place to tell my child to be quiet. Especially when I was dealing with it. He was very unprofessional, condescending, and rude to both of us. We will not be returning and will not be getting our kittens booster there for this reason.

I would not recommend this vet to anybody. Steer clear and take your animals to someone else.

This was my first trip to the Nanaimo Veterinary Clinic after being referred here by a friend. The building is quite small, but service is outstanding. The receptionists were friendly and organized even though they were very busy. My dog seemed happy while waiting which wasn't long at all. Dr. Jill was the vet and she was so funny and easy going. She sat on the floor with my dog, and he was so comfortable with her. Not only did she seem welcoming and nice, she was very thorough and explained everything she did. She told me more about my dogs health in 15 minutes than I had been told in the last three years at my old clinic. I will definitely be coming back!

Dr. Hayward and staff are just excellent. They are efficient and pleasant. Dr. Hayward does not push extra tests or unnecessary procedures. He works with the pet owner as well as the pet, which is extremely important to us. I wouldn't consider using another clinic.

I find the staff to be quite rude. The doctors act as if they only care about money. I brought my cat to this clinic and the vet instantly wanted to drug him up and then at the end was saying it was cruel to keep him alive, and wanted to euthanize him! I am so glad I got a second opinion, because he is perfectly fine. All they care about is their bottom line. I do not recommend anyone go to this clinic.

After seeing some unflattering comments I just had to add my 2cents. Like any medicine some things are just trial and error, but I have found Dr. Hayward to be caring and supportive. My only complaint has been that when I've had a critically sick dog, he's not been around (of course this is NOT a complaint just they way it's worked out, and typical most things happen on the weekend it seems!) Last I checked he is not working alone at this clinic he has two other Vets filling in and working part time. Unfortunately I found this site because it's the weekend and I have a sick dog. Neither he or another on call vet I know and like are available..but I did just have to add my opinion. All medicine is partly guesswork, and just like small children our dogs can't tell you what's wrong. The Vet can only try when they cannot find a direct cause of illness. Dr. Hayward is knowledgable and caring.

I have been taking my dogs to Brett Hayward for over 10 years. He is personable, kind to my pets, talks to me about options and listens to my concerns. He offers a variety of treatments and has been more open to my preference of including holistic and homeopathic treatments with conventional treatment. I have visited other clinics/vets when he is not available, but I always prefer to take my pets back to him.

I have been using this vet for over 15 years and have always been very happy with him. I also used to volunteer at this clinic for experience and was really impressed with their care of pets "behind closed doors" as they really care about your animal and you. I would highly recommend this vet - he is very knowledgeable and this clinic is not money driven.

Dr. Hayward is a wonderful vet! He is very caring and obviously loves animals. After the unfortunate event of having to have our beloved dog put down, he even took the time to send a sympathy card with personalized words of comfort. I highly recommend this clinic if you want a knowledgeable vet who puts the animal first, always.

I have been to other Vets in the last 21 years, and NVH for me is the best care I can get for my animals. Brett and the staff are honest and caring. I have sent many folks to see Brett, and they are all happy with the treatments they receive.

They have always taken the time and effort to help my animals. with dealing with a smaller vet office it is more personalized and my pets are known to the vets there. they get to the bottom of the problem as quickly as possible. They rule out problems before going into more expensive alternatives. I recommend this veterinary clinic.

Dr. Hayward was recommended to us by our Coquitlam vet when we moved to Nanaimo six yrs ago. He is fabulous, caring, does not prescribe unnecessary testing or medication. Our two cats and two dogs are happy and healthy thanks to him. Our oldest dog needed stifle (knee) surgery in Feb. 2011 so Dr. H. recommended us to an excellent surgeon. The after-care provided by Dr. H. and his staff was first-rate. We were advised in advance of the costs involved and it was left up to us to choose if we wanted the least or most expensive option. If you want excellent, reliable, informative care from a vet who personifies the words caring and compassionate, this is the place for you.

Dr. Hayward gets two thumbs up from me. I brought to him my two elderly Rottweilers after moving from Ontario. For both, he was willing to work with me to continue their treatment, and he was super at handling things as they developed. Even with my slightly difficult rescue Rottweiler, he showed no fear or hesitation. When the time came to say goodbye to my beloved pets, the staff and Dr. were very understanding and compassionate. He assisted in the treatment of my guinea pig, and now with my current small dog. The only restrictive factor when dealing with this clinic is the hours of operation. (8-5 M-F) which makes it difficult if you work these hours also. For any vet you choose, you have a choice. If you don't feel comfortable with them, their staff, or how they handled an illness in you pet..you have the ability to go elsewhere. Do what you feel is right your pet (and you).

I have been taking my family dogs (medium to large) to Dr. Hayward for several years and he is very friendly and gentle with them. The staff is generally helpful and friendly although there seem to be new employees every year. Although a small clinic, for regular vet visits, I recommend this clinic. Dr. Hayward is open to discussing various treatments or courses of action, such as foregoing annual vaccinations and looking at holistic therapy. He also agreed to do a house visit when the time came to say goodbye to my animal companions.

Dr Brett Hayward is a wonderful vet ! He treats all of my families pets, and has been very caring and helpful over the years when we've had sick pets. I wish I could say the same about some of the other vets we've seen in town.

Dr Hayward has treated my pets ranging from Guinea Pigs to dogs. He is always very knowledgeable and won't do diagnostic test unless they are truly needed. He responds to phone advice the same day. He obviously love animals and is amazing around them. The staff is always cheerful & happy. Dr. Hayward will even have the staff take my high-strung Golden for a walk so we can discuss things without distraction. Overall the best vet I have every had in my 30 years of owning pets.

This is the best Vet on the Island. My small dog’s eye was slashed and punctured by a cat. Dr Hayward got him in right away and after three total visits he has full vision. The fees charged were very reasonable. I recommend him to all my family and friends and have had nothing but positive feedback

If you don't mind waiting or being put off by the staff when you ask a question about why your appointment time is late, then this is the clinic for you. The problem with this clinic is that it's only a one vet operation so if there's an emergency, real or supposed, you and you're appointment are toast and they won't bother phoning you to tell you the good news but they'd rather let you keep comming in to see "when they can fit you in". Can you say "show me the money"? No, well they can and that's how they operate.

Went here for years until thousands of dollars later we realized we were being used. This included unnecessary surgery, false diagnoses and a real arrogant attitude when you call him on it. Get 2nd and 3rd opinions with this guy it could save you alot of money and heart break.

Dr. Hayward has been treating our golden retriever for cancer for the last six months. She is now in full remission! We have been very pleased with his care and concern for her welfare. He calls us immediately with test results and made it obvious that someone is available in an emergency. The staff are friendly and courteous. Dr. Hayward is very personable. He's always willing to answer our questions and it is obvious that he cares about the welfare of our pet. I am sure that our dog would not be here today without the excellent care she has received from Dr. Hayward.

While Dr. Hayward was able to treat our pet right away, his ability to talk to patients is dreadful. We found the staff was rude and made our emergency out to be a giant inconvenience to them. I would never use this vet again and would write to a board if one existed over his lack of professionalism.

Dr Hayward called from his home after hours to see how my dog was doing. His assistants are all caring, cheerful and obviously love animals. They remember your pet's name and interact with them to calm them and make them feel more at ease. Dr. Hayward is very thorough but will not put your pet through needless testing, but will go one step further when required.
